About the Author
Dave Gerr is a naval architect specializing in the design of yachts and commercial craft to 180 feet. He has worked on vessels ranging from 440-foot cruise ships to a 60-foot BOC racer, a 60-mph jet-drive runabout, a 7-knot, 25-foot cruising motor launch, 100-foot aluminum motoryachts, and an assortment of 40- and 50-foot auxiliaries and motorsailers. Owner of his own design firm, Gerr is a graduate of Westlawn School of Yacht Design and has studied physics at New York University and industrial design at Pratt Institute. He has a particular fascination with the relationship between science and art, function and beauty, and finds in naval architecture a rewarding harmony among these. Dave Gerr's articles on boat design have appeared in Cruising World, Ocean Navigator, SAIL, Yachting, and WoodenBoat. He is a contributing editor for Boatbuilder and Offshore magazines. He is the author of The Nature of Boats and The Elements of Boat Strength, both published by International Marine.

This was obviously intended to be a textbook for a class in Naval Architecture. It fit my needs well in research into designing an auxiliary motor mount. Wish there was a more current version available though.
I needed to re-prop and there is nobody in the country with the information I needed for my 15 meter full displacement boat. I learned enough from this book and some study of the contents to do a very satisfactory calculation for a new prop. Is it perfect ? I do not know, but it is certainly better then what I had ! Very informative as well.
These two books have made the practical application of naval architecture available to every one who is involved with the construction and maintanence of t.heir own vessel. Absolutely first class in every aspect.
Dave's book is what I think has more information than any average boat owner would ever need but the information is great for the guy who truly wants the most from his boat's propulsion system and desires to learn everything he can. From it's pages, I can now figure within reason which prop best fits my boat, engine and driving styles. Thank you.Maxey

Valuable reference for sizing or confirming the sizing of a prop that is being recommended to you.Requires study and a fair bit of math to be accurate, but you can get ballpark estimates without too much effort.
This book is not user friendly, it's really for professionals. It's difficult to read, but if you have a bit of background knowledge, it will help you from interested reader into a professional. For calculating new props on a new boats, this guide will give you all the answers you ever needed and then some more. It's amazing to see how many props are not setup right, once you understand the dynamics.
