Review
Keflezighi is a four-time Olympian who has won the Boston and New York marathons — so it’s fitting that his 2017 New York Marathon was not just his last, but his 26th. That’s one marathon race per marathon mile for an athlete whose wisdom and lessons aren’t just for runners. —The Washington Post“26 Marathons is a swift read, guaranteed to be popular with student athletes plus hard-core and recreational runners, who will undoubtedly agree that Meb is an American treasure and running ambassador who never fails to inspire.”—Booklist starred review“26 Marathons gives great insight about the ups and downs in marathon running and how to cope with them. As Meb shows, dealing with these marathon experiences help us become better in our lives.”—Eliud Kipchoge, Marathon World Record Holder and 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist “Meb’s 26 Marathons is like opening a treasure chest full of inspiring stories that give behind-the-scenes glimpse into the mental and physical joys and obstacles that elite-level racing can bring. His advice on training, overcoming injuries, and adversity is for everyone. It’s pure gold!”—Shalane Flanagan, 2017 TCS NYC Marathon Champion “26 Marathons is a fantastic book. It tells the story of Meb Keflezighi’s career by documenting his marathons, but it’s not really about running. It’s about life! About setting goals and pursuing them, and how to continue to strive to excel in the midst of satisfaction and disappointments. Meb drives home the fact that winning in life isn’t defined by coming in first place. This book is not just for runners. It will help you no matter what your passion in life might be.”—Tony Dungy, Super Bowl Winning Coach, NFL Hall of Famer, and New York Times bestselling author “Meb is as great a champion as I've ever known, and an even better person. 26 MARATHONS is the perfect roadmap for your journey to the top of the mountain. This radiantly brilliant treatise on life through sport, family, faith, perseverance and persistence epitomizes everything that I strive for, and on a path that Meb has already traveled. Thank you, for shining the light, for being the true giant among us, and for showing us that tomorrow is worth the effort to get there. Run on, beam on, teach on, carry on.” —Bill Walton, Former NBA champion & MVP “This book is a gift from Meb. I couldn’t put it down as memories flooded back and his vivid descriptions put us in the races with him. Reading this a race at a time or by the years, first timers and pros alike will be inspired to “run to win” on and off the roads.”—Mary Wittenberg, Former CEO NYRR, Virgin Sport "I've watched Meb build a legendary career in distance running, one marathon at a time. “26 Marathons” is a captivating look at each race from his professional marathon career and the valuable lessons they taught him about running and life." —John Legere, CEO T-Mobile

As a runner/racer for twenty five or so years, once I had to give up running due to too many injuries, I quit cold turkey, my obsession with reading all things running. That was the only way I could keep myself from taking up running again. But now, many years later, I saw this book on NetGalley and knew I could read it since I've successfully replaced running with other types of exercise that I enjoy.I wasn't totally oblivious to the running world and was familiar with the name Meb Keflezighi, especially since marathons were one of my favorite races. Meb is the first person in history to win an Olympic medal, the New York Marathon, and the Boston marathon. Meb was 42 years old when he retired from his extraordinary distance-running career but he's still a runner and his heart is with all runners of all distances and all speeds. In this book he tells about each of the 26 marathons that he ran and the lessons he learned from each one of them. These lessons that don't just relate to running but to life, all aspects of life and can be applied to each of us, even if we've never run a step in our lives. Thanks to this book, I'm back to reading about running. I know I'll be checking out the biography about Meb, Run to Overcome: The Inspiring Story of an American Champion's Long-Distance Quest to Achieve a Big Dream. Thank you to Crown Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC.
If you follow road running at all, you know Meb Keflezighi. He's one of the United States's most accomplished marathon runners, having won Boston, New York, and winning a silver medal at the Olympics. In 26 Marathons: What I've Learned About Faith, Identity, Running, and Life from Each Marathon I've Run, Meb writes about the 26 marathons he ran over his 15 year career as a marathoner. For someone who most of us would view as a superhuman, Meb reveals his humanity. As a recreational runner who has run a few marathons, I could relate to many of Meb's struggles. Of course, there are differences: he runs a marathon twice as fast as I do, and trains well more than twice as much. But a big theme of the book is fighting through struggles and overcoming adversity, in racing and in life. He writes that he runs to win, but points out that "isn't about finishing first, but about getting the best out of yourself."As the saying goes, life is a marathon, and Meb's example proves what that saying implies. For him, life and training and racing is about patience and perseverance. "Grow your capabilities over time, not suddenly two months before a big race." He writes that "The people who have long, successful careers in any endeavor are those who consistently work hard but don't push themselves so much that they break down."And when you meet your goals, celebrate them. "Celebrate every personal best, even it's only by one second." Meb certainly had plenty of personal bests to celebrate. But he was also realistic. For each race, he would set a series of goals, for example, first place, top 3, top 10, or simply to finish. Sometimes during a race, you have to adjust your goals, but can still celebrate.Meb tells some great stories, and shows why he has become so beloved by marathon fans around the world. As you read, you'll cheer for him at every race, grieve with him as he fights injury, and celebrate with him as he bounces back. His is a great American success story. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!
I highly recommend this book (especially to runners). It is a very interesting book by an amazing US marathoner. I loved how each chapter was a race. It was really interesting to read about the tips & tricks that he learned along the way. While I’m not a marathoner (and definitely not as a fast as Meb - 12 min/miler here), many of these insights are just as valuable to me and the half marathon/10-mile distance.Great format, interesting topic - thanks Netgalley for the ARC!
