I love these little 5-minute sketching books. I don't actually need help sketching, as a lifelong artist, I just love looking at and collecting how-to books. I own this one and its companion Landscapes, and both are excellent little books, filled with tips and suggestions for sketching and painting on the go. This is not my usual style of art, and it can be fun sometimes to branch out and try something new! This style is very easy to pick up and very "freeing" in a way, but also very satisfying. It has convinced me to stop worrying so much about perfection and enjoy being in the moment more.
Really good, very generous with advice and there's tons to work on here. Liz Steel knows her stuff, of course, and is a well-known correspondent for Urban Sketchers. But not everyone who knows their stuff can *teach* their stuff. This is an extremely useful book, whether you're getting started or have been sketching cityscapes for awhile.
Liz Steel is the best instructor. I've taken several online classes with her and she has a gift for teaching. She teaches you how to break complex scenes down so you can sketch them. This book is very well done and I'm glad to have it for a reference. Plus the drawings are beautiful!
This small book is jam-packed with useful information. Main points and tips are presented as bullet points with lots of accompanying illustrations. Liz Steel is one of the gurus of the Urban Sketching movement and her book is definitely worth buying. Excellent value. I have taken 2 of her online courses and this book still manages to convey even more information. The 5 Minute part of the title should be more prominent - this is not about detailed architectural drawings. Liz really encourages fast and accurate sketching and provides the tips to get better at doing so.
An excellent book for learning about architectural drawing for ascribing artists. Well written and easy to understand. Encourages even a beginner by taking what would usually be seen as complex and seemingly daunting structures and reducing them to understandable elements in a way that is reassuringly simple!
Big fan of Liz Steel. Good information I would rather have a dvd. Like other urban sketchers I’ve followed, Liz Steel gives you permission to not take yourself too seriously, have fun and everything doesn’t have to be perfect, just believable.
Lovely little book with several, easy to follow sketches that illustrate each point. The chapters are short, limited to a single aspect of sketching. The overall organization of the book is intelligent, moving from basic principles to more unique examples. I expect I'll go back to this book time and time again!
I loved the sketches and examples in this book. I did find myself frustrated at explanations for some of the techniques. They were not explained thoroughly enough for me to understand. I think more explanation about some of her concepts would help. I think she assumes much more than some readers actually know, like myself. But her artistry is amazing! Her sketches are truly worth it. I just wish I could ask her clarifying questions about some of the concepts. It was a little over my head.
